Presenter Bio

Nadine J. Kaslow, Ph.D., ABPP is a Professor and Vice Chair for Faculty Development, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Emory University School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; Chief Psychologist, Grady Health System; and Director of Postdoctoral Residency Training, Emory University School of Medicine. A licensed psychologist in Georgia, she is board certified through the American Board of Professional Psychology in clinical psychology, clinical child and adolescent psychology, and couple and family psychology. In 2012, she received a Doctorate of Humane Letters from Pepperdine University.

The 2014 President of the American Psychological Association (APA), Dr. Kaslow is Past President of four APA divisions (12, 18, 29,43), the American Board of Clinical Psychology and the American Board of Professional Psychology. She is the Former Chair and Board Member Emeritus of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). She has received numerous awards: APA’s Distinguished Contributions for Education and Training Award, APA Presidential Citation, APPIC’s Award for Excellence in Postdoctoral Training, Heiser Award for her legislative advocacy efforts, Beckman Award for inspiring junior colleagues to develop effective community programs, Grady Health Foundation’s Inspiring Mentor Award, Emory University’s Thomas Jefferson Award, and Distinguished Member of Psi Chi. The recipient of multiple federal and foundation grants, she has published over 350 articles and co-edited five books including Supporting Students with Competence Problems: A Practical Guide for Psychology Trainers, Oxford Handbook of Education and Training in Professional Psychology, and Essential psychotherapies 4th edition. She is one of the authors of APA’s Guidelines for Clinical Supervision in Health Service Psychology (2015). She has given countless local, regional, national, and international workshops on psychology education, training, and supervision; leadership development; suicide and depression; and family violence. A member of Rosalynn Carter’s Mental Health Advisory Board, Dr. Kaslow is the psychologist for the Atlanta Ballet and a frequent media guest.

This workshop begins by laying the groundwork for multiculturally competent supervision, focusing on the ways in which such supervision is an ethical imperative and consistent with the competencies movement and guidelines on the provision of effective supervision. Attention is then paid to multicultural supervision competencies and relevant supervisory techniques. This is followed by a discussion of the challenges to implementing multiculturally competent supervision. The pertinent research is reviewed. Throughout the workshop, vignettes are used to highlight the points and the audience is engaged in self-reflective activities related to their competence the conduct of supervision that is multiculturally competent, culturally humble, and attuned to and inclusive of diversity.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

Discuss the 2015 Guidelines for Clinical Supervision in Health Service Psychology Related to Diversity (Domain B) and associated key supervisor multicultural competencies
Describe supervisory techniques for addressing multicultural issues in supervision with humility, empathy, appreciation of culture in self and others, and a social justice lens
Utilize strategies to address the challenges associated with multicultural supervision
