Presenter Bio

Doreen Samelson is a seasoned leader with more than 25 years of experience in leading care for individuals with disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and mental health conditions. Recognized ability in leading change and integrated care, driving access, quality and service and clinical program development with a diverse population. Proven ability to partner with physicians, psychologists, other mental health providers, and board certified behavior analysts. Strong commitment to team building to improve the lives of patients and families.

Lindsey Sneed is a BCBA and Doctoral Candidate. Her dissertation is focused on the efficacy of parent-led ABA for children with ASD and their parents. Lindsey is currently serving as Director of Clinical Standards & Research at the Catalight Foundation. Lindsey has been working in the field of autism treatment for over 13 years. One of her favorite distress tolerance skills is riding her stationary bike.

Erin Shurtlef is a Behavioral Health Manager at Kaiser Permanente North Valley. Erin has spent most of her 22-year career in Behavioral Health but the last 2 years as the Director of Care Experience for the Central Valley. Erin finds DBT to be extremely useful in the clinical setting, with team & organizational development, and in her personal life.

This is a series of workshops examining the empirical and operational usefulness of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) groups for youth and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Workshop presenters have extensive experience working with patients with ASD and providing DBT groups within Kaiser. Workshop participants will learn why DBT is a good treatment choice for patients with ASD as well how to integrate patients with ASD into on-going DBT groups. The workshops will include review of relevant research, practical suggestions for treating patients with ASD, small group discussion and plenty of time for questions.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the core features of autism based on DSM-5 criteria
  2. Describe who is most likely to benefit from applied behavioral analysis (ABA)
  3. List possible reasons for the complex heterogeneity of autism spectrum disorder and how this impacts treatment decisions over the lifespan
  4. Describe at least 2 concerns autistic adults in the neurodiversity movement express about the treatment of ASD
  5. Describe the research basis for CBT in treatment for individuals with high functioning autism
  6. Describe the rational for DBT as an effective treatment modality for individuals with high functioning autism
  7. List two clinical strategies for helping a patient with ASD prepare to join a DBT group
  8. List at least one way a DBT group can be modified to meet the needs of patients with ASD
  9. Describe the importance of the DBT consult group and how to use the consult group to support patients with ASD

Instructional Level

Licensed mental health professionals employed through Kaiser Permanente and psychological assistants performing under supervision of a licensed psychologist.

This CE program is free to Kaiser Permanente employees.

The Kaiser Permanente Northern California Mental Health Training Program maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Refund and Attendance Policy

All programs offered on KP Learn for CE credit through the KP Northern California Mental Health Training website are free of charge to Kaiser Permanente Staff and trainees. Once a course is selected in the KP NCAL MH Training Website, the registration process begins, and it will appear in the individuals KP Learn profile for completion within 90 days.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Those who attend the program in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive CE credits. Please note that credit will only be granted to those who attend the entire program. An attestation of attendance will be given once the individual has completed viewing the program, which will then initiate the final steps of completing the evaluation forms to receive a certificate of completion.
