Gender Affirmative Care for Transgender, Non-Binary, Gender Expansive Youth and Their Families: The Basics and Beyond

Presenter Bio

Shawn V. Giammattei, PhD is a clinical family psychologist in private practice in Northern California and specializes in working with LGBTQ couples and families with a particular focus on the specific issues that arise for transgender/gender expansive youth and their families. He is the founder and CEO of the Gender Health Training Institute, an organization dedicated to helping mental health providers develop confidence and competency providing gender affirmative care to trans people across the lifespan and their families. He is also the founder and humble servant of the TransFamily Alliance, a support community and resource hub for parents/caregivers with trans offspring.

Dr. Giammattei is certified by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health as a gender specialist and mentor, and is on faculty for their Global Education Institute. He is an affiliated researcher, adjunct professor, and past Coordinator of Training for the Rockway Institute: A national center for LGBT psychology research, education, and public policy, at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. He co-created the Rockway Certificate in LGBT Human Services, which includes the first semester long graduate course in transgender mental health and currently teaches graduate level courses in LGBT psychology, transgender mental health, and couples & family therapy. He is a research consultant to Kaiser Permanente, Northern California and Emory University regarding their NIH and PCORI funded studies looking at health outcomes of transgender patients. He is also past president and current council member of the Association of Family Therapists of Northern California; past vice-president and board member of the American Family Therapy Academy; and a member of Mind the Gap, an organization affiliated with the University of California, Beniof, Child and Adolescent Gender Clinic focused on the needs of transgender youth and their families. He is also the author of several articles and book chapters on gender, sexuality, couples, and family work.

This 2 part immersive workshop will explore the many aspects of gender affirmative care that mental health providers need to know to work competently with trans youth and their families. This workshop will cover the basics of language, the construct of gender, gender dysphoria, the WPATH Standards of Care, the gender affirmative model, and self of the therapist issues that may impact your work. We will also discuss more complex issues beyond the basics that address trauma, minority stress, differential diagnosis, and treatment planning. We will cover gender development and journeys for youth, families, and clinicians, working with families who are unsupportive, medical interventions, fertility, and how to support strategies that build resilience for these youth and their families.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of language and using gender affirming terminology when working with trans youth & their families
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the WPATH Standards of Care and when to diverge from them
  3. Identify how your own biases and experience around gender may impact your work
  4. Describe the gender affirmative model and how it differs from other models
  5. Describe the WPATH Standards of Care, how to use them and when to diverge and how the history of transgender care impacts your relationship with your trans client and their family.
  6. Describe the experience of gender dysphoria, gender noise, and gender euphoria.
  7. Identify the differences and similarities of the trans youth’s gender development as compared to their caregivers and how this impacts treatment.
  8. Describe the impact of minority stress and trauma on trans youth and their families
  9. Describe the potential medical interventions trans youth may need and the ages these issues may occur.
  10. Explain the impact of medical treatment on fertility and how to discuss these issues with trans youth and their caregivers.
  11. Assess the impact of gender dysphoria and medical necessity for treatment
  12. Describe the key components to building resilience and supporting families with trans youth.
  13. Assess client’s readiness for medical treatment and informed consent.
  14. Describe common co-occurring issues and how to address these while also addressing gender incongruence.
  15. Explain the process of evaluating clinical models for cis-normative /heteronormative content.

Once a course is selected in the KP NCAL MH Training Website, the registration process begins, and it will appear in the individuals KP Learn profile for completion within 90 days.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Those who attend the program in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive CE credits. Please note that credit will only be granted to those who attend the entire program. An attestation of attendance will be given once the individual has completed viewing the program, which will then initiate the final steps of completing the evaluation forms to receive a certificate of completion.
