When Medicine Interacts with Psychology: A Closer Look at Bariatric Psychology - Kaiser Permanente Mental Health Training Program Northern California

Presenter Bio

Dr. Maryam Hafezi is an experienced clinician in health and assessment psychology. Dr. Hafezi started her work in integrative medicine in the field of behavioral neuroscience on rodent models at University of California, San Diego. She went on to earn her first Master’s degree in research psychology continuing her work in human models of neuro-endocrinology and impact of stress on the brain. Dr. Hafezi then completed her clinical Master’s degree and PSYD degree focusing in on integrative medicine with an emphasis on health psychology. She completed her residency at Kaiser Permanente in Martinez California. Dr. Hafezi has held several positions at Kaiser Permanente including adult team general psychologist and embedded assessment psychologist in bariatrics. Currently Dr. Hafezi works in Connect to Care (ADAPT) and collaborates with bariatrics surgery and regional supervision.

A history of Obesity, food insecurity and body mass index. Definitions and history of body mass index and bariatrics surgery. Psychological evaluations for bariatric surgery, and the stability needed for a patient to succeed bariatric surgery. The neuro-endocrinology and Bio psycho social model of obesity will be explored. The impact of leptin, ghrelin and cortisol hormones impact on hunger and inflammatory responses. Physical, psychological and emotional hunger will be dissected as it relates to a patients day to day behaviors. Post-operative risk factors and the role of malnutrition, malabsorption as it relates to neurological and psychological deficiencies. Will discuss the anatomy of sleep, circadian clock, and impact of alcohol pre and post surgery. The impact of behavioral activation in bariatric patients as it relates to key core beliefs.

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

Describe an overview of obesity and bariatric surgery in the USA
Explain the interplay of psychology and medical disease as it relates to Obesity
Describe the roles of the Bariatric psychologist pre and post-surgery
