Presenter Bio

Dr. Kenneth V. Hardy is a Clinical and Organizational Consultant at the Eikenberg Institute for Relationships in New York, NY where he also serves as Director. He provides Racially Focused Trauma Informed training, executive coaching, and consultation to a diverse network of individuals and organizations throughout the United States and abroad. He is a former Professor of Family Therapy at both Drexel University in Philadelphia, and Syracuse University in New York, and has also served as the Director of Children, Families, and Trauma at the Ackerman Institute for the Family in New York, NY.

He is the author of:

The rapidly changing demographics of our society as well as the current outburst of racial unrest make it virtually mandatory for supervisors and clinicians to develop effective strategies for attending to issues of race throughout all domains of the clinical process. Even when the desire and commitment to be more racially attuned are clear, possessing the “know how” to achieve such a lofty and often-difficult undertaking leaves many supervisors in a quandary.
This workshop will provide an overview of the core principles of racially sensitive supervision and provide participants with strategies for integrating race and other dimensions of diversity into the supervisory process. Special attention will be devoted to an exploration of the relevant Self of the Supervisor issues that may facilitate and/or impede the process of supervision.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe and apply at least three core principles that define racially competent supervision
  2. Utilize a five-step conceptual model for effectively addressing racially and culturally based relational ruptures, harm, and injuries that may occur in therapy and/or supervision
  3. Apply strategies that will equip supervisors and clinicians to effectively facilitate difficult and sensitive race related conversations in clinical practice and beyond
  4. Prepare supervisors to effectively intervene and constructively address toxic racially based microaggressions and messages that threaten to sabotage therapy and supervision
  5. Identify the role and purpose of a utilizing a Self of the Therapist Approach to advancing racially sensitive supervision and clinical practice
  6. Identify and analyze racially-based Self of the Therapist/Supervisor issues that can impede and/or facilitate one’s ability to effectively navigate issues of race in therapy and supervision

Refund and Attendance Policy

All programs offered on KP Learn for CE credit through the KP Northern California Mental Health Training website are free of charge to Kaiser Permanente Staff and trainees. Once a course is selected in the KP NCAL MH Training Website, the registration process begins, and it will appear in the individuals KP Learn profile for completion within 90 days.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Those who attend the program in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive CE credits. Please note that credit will only be granted to those who attend the entire program. An attestation of attendance will be given once the individual has completed viewing the program, which will then initiate the final steps of completing the evaluation forms to receive a certificate of completion.
