The Efficacy and Effectiveness of Treatment for PTSD with Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)

This 2-hour workshop introduces participants to diagnosis and treatment for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Next a theoretical approach to PTSD will be discussed, explaining how PTSD symptoms develop, natural recovery from trauma, and the failure to recover. The workshop will provide an overview of the efficacy and the effectiveness of Prolonged Exposure (PE). It will include a presentation of the PE components, in vivo exposure, imaginal exposure. Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the diagnostic criteria of the DSM-5
  2. Discuss emotional processing theory as it is related to prolonged exposure. so that participants will be able to understand fundamental goals of prolonged exposure. This will allow flexibility in the use of PE
  3. Summarize studies that demonstrate the efficacy of prolonged exposure so that participants will gain confidence in using this treatment
