LatinX Mental Health & Wellness Virtual Summit – Workshop A: I Can’t Breathe’: A Narrative Approach to Healing Racial Trauma and Violence In the Lives Of Black Men

DAY 2 – November 13, 2020

In the beginning of the session, presenters will provide an overview of the forum including learning outcomes for participants. 10 minutes will be spent reviewing past and current political and social climate and the effects it has had on the African American community. For the next 40 minutes, participants will be presented with both case studies and literature reviews in understanding how PTSD stems from racial trauma and negatively impacts the overall well-being of poor Black youth. The remainder of the session will be spent providing an open forum to participants to discuss and recommend possible solutions or technique through a cultural lens in working with this marginalized population.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

*Based on the content of this session, participants will examine identify how sociopolitical factors such as institutionalized racism contributes to the mental health complications of Black men in America. .
*Describe how to socially locate themselves in the therapy room in order to deliver racially sensitive treatment.
*Based on the content of this session, participants will be able to develop a treatment plan and implement interventions through a narrative and critical lens that provide resources to help young Black men build their strengths and sense of self.
