Presenter Bio

Grant Hovik, MA received his Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University, Teachers College. Mr. Hovik has worked in the field of substance use disorders through research, training, and technical assistance since 2009. Currently, he is a clinical trainer and health educator for UCLA Integrated Substance Use and Addiction Programs (ISAP) and the Pacific Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center (PSATTC), where he conducts a variety of trainings on evidence-based practices for substance use including Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment. Mr. Hovik is currently the co-director of the Pacific Mental Health Awareness Training (P-MHAT) project at UCLA ISAP, where he leads training and technical assistance activities to address mental health issues that arise in Pacific Islander communities such as suicide, psychosis, and substance use. Mr. Hovik is also an instructor for UCLA Extension’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certification Program where he teaches about the science of substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders.

This training introduces Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) as an evidence-based approach for addressing substance use in health care settings. Participants will learn how to conduct effective screenings, apply Motivational Interviewing skills using the FLO model (Feedback, Listen and Understand, Options Explored), and make appropriate referrals for individuals with more serious substance use concerns. While SBIRT is used across a range of healthcare settings, this training highlights its application with individuals experiencing mental health conditions and co-occurring disorders.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

Identify at least two (2) goals of conducting SBIRT in health settings.
Describe at least two (2) examples of screening tools to identify patients at risk of substance use problems.
Explain the three (3) steps of the brief intervention and how they can enhance motivation to change at-risk behavior and/or seek treatment.
Specify at least two (2) uses of the Importance/Confidence/Readiness Ruler.
