Mental Health Fellowship

Our positions offer generalist training with a broad range of experiences and opportunities for depth of practice. Fellows will work with patients of all ages, and across our service lines for training experience on three different multidisciplinary teams of providers: the Adult Mental Health team, the Child & Family Team, and Addiction Medicine Recovery Services. This variety of exposure will allow the fellow to have experience that is both sequential and increasingly complex across the year, as well as unique and broad based as a platform for providing healthcare services of the future. Some elements of the program and the fellow’s schedule will remain in place throughout the year, and other elements trade and rotate for

Adult Team Rotation is year long. The fellow will be provided opportunity for supervised professional experience assessing adults in the outpatient specialty mental health department. Assignment of cases will reflect the trainee’s development of skills and ability to formulate appropriate treatment plans. Cases are supervised by the same supervisor throughout the year, who helps determine the complexity of this work. Fellows work with their patients individually and in group settings on the Adult Team. Fellows have opportunity to conduct evidence-based skills groups for adults with licensed staff group facilitators, and to assist with different groups of their interest. Staff providers who are excellent role models for practicing social workers and marriage and family therapists are among our staff of providers on the Adult Team. In addition, several of our departmental leaders and directors have LMFT and LCSW credentials.

These rotations also lasts for the full year and is a pillar of the fellows’ development.

Our Addiction Medicine Recovery Services provides care to over 1400 unique patients each year, and is a model of integrated and group based care.

A component which will be new to our training program will be the opportunity to shadow providers engaged in their work in hospital-based care. We are working now to determine whether our medical social work or other team of providers would provide the best opportunity to experience an entirely different training context. This description will be updated when the specifics can be outlined. Each Fellow would be given opportunity to engage in this rotation.

Many teams of multidisciplinary mental health specialists make up our department in Walnut Creek. Our providers maintain a very busy pace and provide services to members with a high level of acuity. You can hear their passion for the work and see their willingness to evaluate and modify approaches. This passion and productivity are palpable! In this setting, the staff who become fellowship supervisors truly feel a calling for teaching and training and consider it a special gift in their professional lives. When we gather for our monthly supervisory meetings, it is clearly a favorite activity and an opportunity to bring our “best selves” to the table.
