The Richmond medical center is located in downtown Richmond with easy access to Richmond’s downtown shops. Both cities pride themselves on being more affordable than San Francisco. Both cities are near enough that the resources of San Francisco are easily accessible after work when wanted or needed. Nearby both cities are the Napa Valley and Lake Tahoe areas which make for nice weekend trips.
The Richmond positions are located in the City of Richmond which is in the San Francisco Bay Area. The demographics of the clinic match those of the wider community. In 2010 Richmond had a population of 103,701. The population density was 1,976.0 inhabitants per square mile (762.9/km2). The racial makeup of Richmond was 32,590 (31.4%) White, 27,542 (26.6%) African American, 662 (0.6%) Native American, 13,984 (13.5%) Asian (4.0% Chinese, 3.5% Filipino, 1.6% Laotian, 1.2% Indian, 0.7% Vietnamese, 0.6% Japanese, 0.4% Korean, 0.2% Pakistani, 0.1% Thai), 537 (0.5%) Pacific Islander, 22,573 (21.8%) from other races, and 5,813 (5.6%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 40,921 persons (39.5%). Among the Hispanic population, 27.3% were of Mexican origin, 4.7% Salvadoran, 1.7% Guatemalan, and 1.2% Nicaraguan heritage. The demographics patients served by the clinic match those of the broader population.
As an organization, Kaiser serves over 4 million people in Northern California. The total population served by Kaiser in Oakland and Richmond (those who are health plan members, which, as noted, fairly closely match the broader population) is approximately 1 million persons.
Program Highlights
Richmond has had training programs since the 1990s. Both sites have well trained faculty and all supervisors choose to be part of the training program. There are regularly several psychologists who would like to be involved in training but cannot.
Both sites in the CBC have training for master’s level clinician, psychologists at all levels of training, and both host a psychiatry residency program based in Oakland.

This position will work with the Richmond Crisis Response Team doing return calls and occasional emergency department consultations. The position will also carry a small general case load of patients.
Advanced competencies in treatment in of patients who are psychiatrically unstable are emphasized.
The resident may also be required to complete call shifts multiple times during the training year which may include weekends. Advanced competencies in treatment in of patients who are psychiatrically unstable are emphasized.

This training provides crisis intervention, brief psychotherapy, psychoeducational groups, case management and intensive outpatient treatment services. Many patients who are served by this resident receive a team approach delivered by a psychologist or licensed clinical social worker (who provides psychotherapy), and/or a prescribing psychiatrist or clinical nurse specialist (who provides medication services), and/or psycho-educational classes and groups.
The resident in this position may be required to supervise practicum student(s).This position also provides training in intake, evaluation and treatment planning with adults as well as short term psychotherapy and crisis intervention. The resident co-leads therapy groups and observes as well as assists in teaching psycho-educational (primarily cognitive-behavioral oriented) classes. The resident may rotate through the crisis response team and spend a quarter of their time during the training year in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The resident may also be required to complete call shifts multiple times during the training year which may include weekends. Advanced competencies in treatment in of patients who are psychiatrically unstable are emphasized.
