San Rafael is located in Marin County, home to well-known landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Tamalpais, Muir Woods, Sausalito and the Green Gulch Zen Center. Marin County is also well known for its open space and miles of hiking and cycling trails and is geographically positioned for easy access to urban areas of San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland. The Golden Gate Bridge is a 20-minute drive, the Pacific Ocean is a 25-minute drive, the North Coast is a 30-minute drive and the Sierra Nevada Mountains are a 3-hour drive.
Kaiser Permanente Health Plan members, primarily from Marin and Sonoma counties, are from a wide spectrum of primarily middle/working class adults, families, adolescents and children. The patient population is culturally diverse with a wide array of psychological issues.
Our Mental Health Department is comprised of 5 teams: The Adult Team, the Child and Family team, the Intensive Outpatient Program, the Eating Disorder program, and the Addiction Medicine Recovery Services (AMRS).
The Department of Mental Health at the San Rafael Medical Center is located at 111 Smith Ranch Road. It is the second largest department in the medical center and provides a range of diagnostic and treatment services organized into three basic areas: Adult Services, including an Intensive Outpatient Program, Addiction Medicine Recovery Services and Child and Family Services. The clinic also provides for 24-hour psychiatric emergency services for acute psychiatric or addiction medicine needs. Our staff has a wide range of theoretical orientations, although Kaiser Permanente emphasizes a multi-modal approach to treatment involving brief therapy and a wide variety of group treatment programs, including both traditional EBT as well as third wave therapies.
Approximately 40 of our providers are licensed psychologists. Other disciplines on staff include psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, registered nurses and marriage and family therapists. A team of triage staff members provide front line access for patients through telephone and face-to-face contacts
Program Highlights
The supplemental practicum extern resides in two program service lines: Addiction Medicine and Psychiatry Mental Health. Externs apply to one service line for their primary training and supervision, with an option for additional experience in one of our specialty program areas of Behavior Medicine, Intensive Outpatient Psychiatry, or Eating Disorders. Externs participate in a highly integrative care model care that utilizes a variety of evidence based best practices. They provide individual and group psychotherapy services and will have opportunities for psychological testing depending on patients’ needs and students’ interests.
