This presentation will provide an overview of current drug trends nationally and in California. Dr. Freese will offer a review of psychological and physical effects of substance use including alcohol, opioids, and stimulants and offer information on emerging drug trends and practical suggestions for addressing substance use disorders in the context of your clinical practice. This will include strategies for having collaborative conversations with clients about substance use, identifying when substance use might be a problem, addressing problematic substance use in your clinical care, and knowing when and how to make a referral to a specialist. The presentation will emphasize that medical and behavioral health providers already employ that can be utilized for addressing substance use in people in your care.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify 3 important drug trends in California
- Describe 2 simple screening procedures into clinical practice
- Identify 3 physical/psychological effects of substance use than can impact your interactions with patients
- Describe strategies to address SUD with clients as part of clinical care
