Presenter Bio

Dr. Thomas Crawford is a clinical psychologist who has spent most of his career specializing in the diagnostic assessment of autism spectrum disorders. Though his primary role has been as the senior psychologist at the Kaiser Permanente ASD Clinic in San Jose, he has also maintained a private practice where he often evaluates and provides ongoing therapy with adults as well as children who have autism. He has conducted or supervised thousands of autism evaluations of across a very wide range of ages, levels of functioning, and clinical presentations. Dr. Crawford conducts ASD evaluations using evidenced-based practices and several years ago, he performed hundreds of assessments for Kaiser’s Division of Research. He also served in the past as the post-doctoral training director for the Kaiser ASD center. Over the last 15 years, he has been an invited speaker for the Northern California Kaiser Psychiatry Residency Program, schools, and other agencies. He obtained his PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Connecticut and both his internship and post-doctoral residency were with Kaiser Permanente outpatient psychiatry clinics treating children, adults, and families. He also served as a counselor at a school for children with ASDs and other behavioral and learning disorders.

Assessments of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) in adults include multiple challenges, especially in non-severe cases. The purpose of this training is to review common symptom presentations of the DSM-5 criteria for ASD in adults, detail the components of assessment protocols, and review both differential diagnoses and common co-occurring conditions.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Create an assessment protocol to conduct an ASD assessment for your adult patients
  2. Describe varied symptom presentations of ASDs in adults
  3. Apply the DSM 5 diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder for your adult patients
  4. Describe differential diagnoses in assessment of ASDs

Once a course is selected in the KP NCAL MH Training Website, the registration process begins, and it will appear in the individuals KP Learn profile for completion within 90 days.

Please note that credit will only be granted to those who attend the entire program. An attestation of attendance will be given once the individual has completed viewing the program, which will then initiate the final steps of completing the evaluation forms to receive a certificate of completion.
