New Frontiers in Psychedelics and Mental Health

Presented by Allison Feduccia, PhD

Presenter Bio

The re-emergent field of psychedelic research is offering new opportunities to understand how these tools can be used to promote healing and well-being. My focus in this area revolves around both clinical research trials and community support. I’m the Co-Founder of Psychedelic.Support, an online platform to connect with mental health professionals and educational resources, and Co-Founder and Executive Director of Project New Day, a new nonprofit foundation aimed to help people overcome substance use disorders.

Prior to this, I worked for 5 years on the clinical trials team at MAPS Public Benefit Corporation (MAPS PBC). After earning a Ph.D. in neuropharmacology from the University of Texas at Austin by utilizing rodent models to study the effects of MDMA on behavior and neurochemical release, I held a postdoctoral research position in the Preclinical Development Group at Ernest Gallo Clinic and Research Center at the University of California San Francisco where our experiments aimed to discover novel treatment strategies for alcohol dependence by elucidating the mechanism of action of medications used to treat substance use disorders. In 2012, I received a Postdoctoral Research Training Award from the National Institutes of Health that enabled me to work on clinical trials at NIAAA in Bethesda, MD investigating novel therapeutics for alcoholism.

What are psychedelics? Why are they under investigation for treating mental health conditions? How are psychedelic-assisted therapies administered and what does the research tell us?

Join for a presentation to discover how psychedelic-assisted therapies are delivered in clinical trials to treat mental health conditions. You will learn the key facts on how MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine work in the body and how these substances are combined with therapeutic approaches. Become knowledgeable on clinical protocols, safety and efficacy results, study participant accounts, and potential risks in both medical and non-medical settings. You will explore different therapeutic approaches for ketamine and those under investigation for MDMA and psilocybin treatments.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the history of psychedelics from their discovery to modern-day psychiatric uses.
  • Describe how psychedelics (MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine) work in the brain and body to induce psychological and physiological effects.
  • Discuss the safety profile of common psychedelics in both medical and non-medical contexts.
  • List contraindicated medical conditions and medications for psychedelic use.
  • Describe clinical uses of psychedelics including protocols, routes of administration, dosing, and therapeutic frameworks.
  • Explain the state of clinical research on MDMA, psilocybin, ketamine, and other psychedelic compounds for psychiatric indications.
  • Summarize how clinicians deliver psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and outcomes in clinical trials.
