Gender Affirmative Care for Transgender, Non-Binary, Gender Expansive Youth and Their Families: The Basics and Beyond – (This Presentation is for East Bay Kaiser Permanente Employees Only) October 14 & 15, 2021
This two-day immersive workshop will explore the many aspects of gender affirmative care that mental health providers need to know to work competently with trans youth and their families. This workshop will cover the basics of language, the construct of gender, gender dysphoria, the WPATH Standards of Care, the gender affirmative model, and self of the therapist issues that may impact your work. We will also discuss more complex issues beyond the basics that address trauma, minority stress, differential diagnosis, and treatment planning. We will cover gender development and journeys for youth, families, and clinicians, working with families who are unsupportive, medical interventions, fertility, and how to support strategies that build resilience for these youth and their families.

Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the importance of language and using gender affirming terminology when working with trans youth & their families
- Demonstrate an understanding of the WPATH Standards of Care and when to diverge from them
- Identify how your own biases and experience around gender may impact your work
- Describe the gender affirmative model and how it differs from other models
- Describe the WPATH Standards of Care, how to use them and when to diverge and how the history of transgender care impacts your relationship with your trans client and their family.
- Describe the experience of gender dysphoria, gender noise, and gender euphoria.
- Identify the differences and similarities of the trans youth’s gender development as compared to their caregivers and how this impacts treatment.
- Describe the impact of minority stress and trauma on trans youth and their families
- Describe the potential medical interventions trans youth may need and the ages these issues may occur.
- Explain the impact of medical treatment on fertility and how to discuss these issues with trans youth and their caregivers.
- Assess the impact of gender dysphoria and medical necessity for treatment
- Describe the key components to building resilience and supporting families with trans youth.
- Assess client’s readiness for medical treatment and informed consent.
- Describe common co-occurring issues and how to address these while also addressing gender incongruence.
- Explain the process of evaluating clinical models for cis-normative /heteronormative content.
