Interdisciplinary Pain Management & Psychosocial Considerations for Evaluation and Treatment of Pain

Chronic pain is a burgeoning health issue in the United States. It is estimated to afflict over 20% of the population at a cost that exceeds $500 billion per year and has been linked with the evolution of the opioid crisis. The current workshop will delineate the role of psychological factors in the etiology, maintenance, and exacerbation of pain, provide an overview of evidence-based psychological treatments for pain, and highlight the essential function psychology plays in interdisciplinary pain management. The session will also give background information on the origins of the opioid crisis in the US, efforts to address it, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on overdose patterns.
