Beyond the Basics: Contemporary Topics in Clinical Supervision

Presenter Bio

Dr. Danielle Keenan-Miller is a therapist, psychological scientist, consultant, and clinical supervisor. She completed her Ph.D. at UCLA and her postdoctoral fellowship at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. Following her training, she served as the Associate Director of Clinical Training at the University of Southern California and then was the Director of the UCLA Psychology Clinic for more than a decade. Her research focuses on mood disorders, eating disorders, and effective practices in supervision and training. She has authored more than two dozen scientific articles and a book entitled the Binge Eating Prevention Workbook. She is a licensed psychologist in California and New York, where her clinical practice focuses on the integration of the art and science of psychotherapy.

Dr. Sarah M. Thompson is a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in clinical supervision and training, third-wave cognitive behavioral therapies, and evidence-based treatments for trauma. After receiving her PhD in Clinical Psychology from UCLA, she served as the Associate Director of the University of Tennessee Psychological Clinic, where she trained graduate students across mental health disciplines in evidence-based practices and clinical supervision. Sarah currently conducts individual and couple therapy
with adults and provides training, consultation, and supervision through Snapdragon Psychology in Los Angeles, California. Her research and writing focuses on clinical supervision and professional development.

While serving as a clinical supervisor can be a rewarding aspect of mental health practice, supervision is also a challenging and ever-evolving specialty that requires significant effort, patience, and skill. This course will provide participants with an up-to-date review of emerging evidence and best practices in modern supervision, including effective use of technology, integration of measurement-based care, and the provision of helpful feedback to trainees. Contemporary legal, ethical, and cultural considerations will be integrated throughout. Through presentation of data and real-world examples, this course will help participants develop cutting-edge, evidence-based skills in the effective practice of clinical supervision.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify two ethical challenges unique to telesupervision
  2. Describe how to implement at least one evidence-based measurement tool into supervision planning
  3. Identify at least three challenges in conducting accurate measurement of supervisee skill
  4. Identify at least three core principles of providing effective feedback to supervisees

Refund and Attendance Policy

All programs offered on KP Learn for CE credit through the KP Northern California Mental Health Training website are free of charge to Kaiser Permanente Staff and trainees. Once a course is selected in the KP NCAL MH Training Website, the registration process begins, and it will appear in the individuals KP Learn profile for completion within 90 days.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Those who attend the program in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive CE credits. Please note that credit will only be granted to those who attend the entire program. An attestation of attendance will be given once the individual has completed viewing the program, which will then initiate the final steps of completing the evaluation forms to receive a certificate of completion.
