Presenter Bio

Peter W. Tuerk, Ph.D is a clinical psychologist and Professor at the University of Virginia, where he serves as Director of a multidisciplinary outpatient behavioral health training clinic, servicing 6,000 clinical encounters annually. Dr. Tuerk specializes in evidence-based treatments (EBTs) for anxiety-spectrum disorders, related research and training, and the integration of technology into clinical care.  He conducts research and clinical trials focused on the augmentation of evidence-based treatments, serving as Principal Investigator on NIH, VA, and DoD research awards, integrating artificial intelligence, virtual reality, mobile health, applied psychophysiology, and crowd sourcing into clinical care settings. As a scientist-practitioner, Dr. Tuerk maintains an active patient load in clinical care is the author of 120 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and commissioned government reports. He has served in lead roles for international system-wide clinical training and dissemination initiatives and for regional clinical training initiatives in 25 US states, Puerto Rico, and Japan. He is the recipient of VA’s highest honor, the Olin E. Teague Award for outstanding career achievement in the rehabilitation of war-injured veterans.

The training is divided into two sections. The first portion addresses synchronous telehealth/clinical videoconferencing, focusing on pragmatic tools and techniques for best practices and evidence-based intervention. It will include templates, session checklists, and practical tips for optimizing the therapeutic relationship and client behavior change in the telehealth context. The second portion addresses technology use and adaptations for evidence-based mental health interventions employed in a variety of synchronous and asynchronous formats  (e.g., mobile apps, web apps, wearables, virtual reality, AI, etc.).  It includes a pragmatic and accessible summary of the scientific literature to provide clinicians with an updated education and modern working knowledge of the major uses and functions of digital technologies in mental health intervention, as well as several demonstrations. Overall, it aims to highlight and demonstrate several specific usable technologies and tools for clinicians to consider in their EBT practice.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. List and employ at least three practices from expert consensus guidelines regarding client safety in synchronous telehealth.
  2. List and employ at least three key practices for facilitating and safeguarding therapeutic alliance in synchronous telehealth.
  3. List four of the several major functions of digital technologies as they pertain to EBT practice and mental health.
  4. Identify and employ at least three specific and highly-usable strategies to expand clinician use of technologies in EBT implementation.
