Presenter Bio

Adrian Aguilera, Ph.D., is the Chancellor’s Professor in the School of Social Welfare and Computational Precision Health at UC Berkeley and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at UC San Francisco. At UC Berkeley, Dr. Aguilera directs the Digital Health Equity and Access Lab (dHEAL). He is trained as a clinical psychologist and is an expert in cognitive and behavioral approaches to treating depression and anxiety. His research is focused on utilizing mobile phone technologies and data science to implement mental health interventions to address health disparities in low-income and marginalized populations. He leads work in innovative digital health interventions that are designed with and for underserved communities and conducts pragmatic, real-world implementations in public sector and community-based settings. He has extensive formal training in implementation science, community-based research methods and integrating cultural sensitivity all while developing innovative digital technology-based interventions.

This training introduces trainees to practical, equity-centered uses of digital tools in cognitive behavioral therapy, from mobile apps to emerging AI and large language model supports. Participants will explore how digital CBT can expand access, enhance engagement, and support culturally responsive care while navigating real-world clinical constraints such as privacy, documentation, and scope of practice. Through examples, learners will examine how patients are already using digital tools and how clinicians can integrate them safely and effectively. The course emphasizes health equity, including adaptations for language, culture, and digital literacy, with concrete strategies trainees can apply in their next session.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe core principles of digital health equity and identify how access, engagement, language, and culturally responsive design influence the use of CBT apps and AI tools with diverse patient populations.
  2. Analyze the evidence base for app-based and AI-supported CBT interventions and select tools that align with clinical goals and the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse patients.
  3. Apply digital CBT strategies in routine practice by demonstrating how to integrate apps or AI tools into assessment, cognitive restructuring, and between-session skill practice.
  4.  Use digital CBT tools for cultural relevance and varying levels of digital literacy by modifying language, examples, and delivery methods to improve engagement and treatment fit, including for Latino populations.
