Presenter Bio

Dr. Ryan Van Lieshout is a perinatal psychiatrist and a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He is the Canada Research Chair in Perinatal Mental Health, the Albert Einstein/Irving Zucker Chair in Neuroscience, and a member of the Royal Society of Canada. His research and clinical work are focused on developing, testing, and disseminating evidence-based interventions aimed at increasing access to treatment for those with perinatal mental disorders. He is also interested in examining how these treatments affect offspring brain development and mental disorder risk across the lifespan. He has published more than 225 peer-reviewed papers and has secured nearly $40M in research funding.

This presentation will describe evidence-based practices for screening, identifying, diagnosing, and treating pregnant people and birthing parents with perinatal depression.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify evidence-based screening tools for detecting perinatal depression
  • Describe the clinical presentation of pregnant or postpartum people with major depressive disorder
  • Identify the differential diagnosis of individuals presenting with depression during the perinatal period
  • Describe evidence-based treatments for perinatal depression including the benefits and drawbacks of both
  • Identify the risks and benefits of different treatments for major depressive disorder during pregnancy and/or the postpartum period
  • Explain the benefits of treating perinatal depression for parents and their offspring

All programs offered on KP Learn for CE credit through the KP Northern California Mental Health Training website are free of charge to Kaiser Permanente Staff and trainees. Once a course is selected in the KP NCAL MH Training Website, the registration process begins, and it will appear in the individuals KP Learn profile for completion within 90 days.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Those who attend the program in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive CE credits. Please note that credit will only be granted to those who attend the entire program. An attestation of attendance will be given once the individual has completed viewing the program, which will then initiate the final steps of completing the evaluation forms to receive a certificate of completion.
