This talk is aimed at equipping therapists with the scientific theory, approach, and interventions to assist people with achieving a 30-day period of abstinence from a substance or behavioral addiction in an outpatient setting. We’ve adopted Anna Lembke’s Dopamine Nation into a structured intervention and want to share how the DOPAMINE acronym can help patients with smoking cessation, daily drinking, compulsive shopping & masturbation, and phone addiction.
Course Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the neuroscience of the reward circuitry
- Discuss how the DOPAMINE acronym can assist in having addiction related conversations with patients, including moderation versus abstinence, cross addiction, and honesty in recovery
- Explain the science of addiction through metaphor and accessible language
