The Missing Piece: Why Family Recovery Matters in Addiction Treatment

Presenter Bio

Dr. Heather Austin-Robillard is a Assistant Professor of Practice and Program Director in the Addictive Disorders and Recovery Studies Program at Texas Tech University. A licensed marriage and family therapist and clinical supervisor, she specializes in systemic approaches to addiction treatment, family recovery, and trauma-informed care. Dr. Austin-Robillard’s work integrates clinical practice, teaching, and research focused on the intersection of family dynamics and recovery
outcomes.

Addiction impacts the entire family system. This interactive presentation explores how family recovery supports long-term outcomes for both individuals with substance use disorders as well as their families. Participants will learn practical, evidence-based ways to engage families, shift dysfunctional roles, and promote healing across the system.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of family recovery in improving addiction treatment outcomes by identifying common relational and systemic barriers to family recovery.
  2. Describe evidence-based approaches to integrating family programming emphasizing engagement and resilience.
  3. Apply systemic and developmental models of family recovery to clinical practice within healthcare or treatment settings.

Refund and Attendance Policy

All programs offered on KP Learn for CE credit through the KP Northern California Mental Health Training website are free of charge to Kaiser Permanente Staff and trainees. Once a course is selected in the KP NCAL MH Training Website, the registration process begins, and it will appear in the individuals KP Learn profile for completion within 90 days.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Those who attend the program in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive CE credits. Please note that credit will only be granted to those who attend the entire program. An attestation of attendance will be given once the individual has completed viewing the program, which will then initiate the final steps of completing the evaluation forms to receive a certificate of completion.
