The Power of Mindful Self-Compassion

Presenter Bio

Kristin Neff, PhD, received her doctorate in Human Development from the University of California at Berkeley in 1997. She is currently an Associate Professor in Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. A true pioneer in the field, over a decade ago she first identified self-compassion as a measurable trait, and now there are over a thousand published studies on the benefits of self-compassion. In conjunction with Chris Germer she co-developed Mindful Self-Compassion, an eight-week empirically supported training program in self-compassion that is currently taught all over the world. She is also cofounder of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.

Self-compassion involves treating ourselves kindly, like we would a good friend we cared about. Rather than continually judging and evaluating ourselves, self-compassion involves generating kindness toward ourselves as imperfect humans, and learning to be present with the inevitable struggles of life with greater ease. It motivates us to make needed changes in our lives not because we’re worthless or inadequate, but because we care about ourselves and want to lessen our suffering. This workshop will provide simple tools for responding in a kind, compassionate way when we experience painful emotions. Through discussion and experiential exercises, you will gain practical skills to help bring self-compassion into you daily life. You will learn how to stop being so hard on yourself; motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism, and care for others without losing yourself.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the three key components of self-compassion
  2. Describe key research that supports the benefits of self-compassion
  3. Explain the difference between self-compassion and self-esteem
  4. Practice techniques to increase self-compassion in everyday life
  5. Practice kindness rather than self-criticism with yourself

Instructional Level

Licensed mental health professionals employed through Kaiser Permanente and psychological assistants performing under supervision of a licensed psychologist.

This CE program is free to Kaiser Permanente employees.

The Kaiser Permanente Northern California Mental Health Training Program maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Refund and Attendance Policy

All programs offered on KP Learn for CE credit through the KP Northern California Mental Health Training website are free of charge to Kaiser Permanente Staff and trainees. Once a course is selected in the KP NCAL MH Training Website, the registration process begins, and it will appear in the individuals KP Learn profile for completion within 90 days.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Those who attend the program in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive CE credits. Please note that credit will only be granted to those who attend the entire program. An attestation of attendance will be given once the individual has completed viewing the program, which will then initiate the final steps of completing the evaluation forms to receive a certificate of completion.
