LatinX Mental Health & Wellness Virtual Summit – Workshop C: Eating Disorders, Weight Stigma and Marginalized Communities: Applying a Social Justice Lens for Healing and Liberation
DAY 2 – November 13, 2020
Despite the prevailing myth that eating disorders are prevalent only in affluent, cisgender, heterosexual young girls, they are serious but treatable mental illnesses that can affect people of every age, size, sex, gender, race, ability and socioeconomic group. Eating disorders are more pervasive than we think especially when we bring weight stigma into the conversation. When eating disorders present themselves outside of the prevailing myth, identification and treatment through a social justice lens is critical. This workshop will draw on clinical treatment in the field of eating disorders emphasizing social justice approaches. Our time together is created for you to bring your curiosity and experiences for sharing. Ultimately, this workshop strives for you to feel connected and empowered with access to further consultation, specific treatment ideas and tools to implement immediately in your own work and conversations with loved ones.
