The Northern California Mental Health Training Program is pleased to spotlight Carey Rivera (He/Him), a Post-Master’s Fellow who earned his Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Touro University in 2024.
Carey’s interest in the mental health field began with a desire to help people in need. His professional journey includes experience as an EMT, a Substance Use Disorder Certified Counselor, and a school-based therapist supporting children, adolescents, and families. Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente, he also worked as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist providing telehealth services to children, adolescents, adults, and couples throughout California.
At Kaiser Permanente, Carey values the opportunity to work within an integrated healthcare system that offers comprehensive support for patients. Through ongoing training, didactics, and exposure to a variety of therapeutic modalities, he has continued to strengthen his clinical skills and expand his knowledge. He also enjoyed facilitating an anger management group, which helped further develop his clinical intervention experience.
Carey credits the support and guidance of his clinical managers, supervisors, and colleagues as key contributors to his professional growth and increasing confidence as a therapist. He looks forward to continuing to develop his clinical expertise while working toward licensure and serving the community.
Outside of work, Carey enjoys spending time with his children, hiking, fishing, visiting the beach, and restoring his 1967 Chevy C10, a project he hopes to complete in the coming years.
