Introducing the new Trauma Specialty Training

The Mental Health Training Program (MHTP) is offering an innovative new training specialty in evidence-based treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Starting this year trainees at the post-master’s, doctoral intern, and postdoctoral resident levels will be able to apply to one of three training tracks: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Trainees will receive training and consultation in their treatment modality as they utilize these interventions with patients.

Participating in a trauma specialty will provide trainees with in depth training on the theory behind the treatment and how to provide the treatment within a complex and diverse population. Each week they will meet with their consultant and training cohort to review cases and discuss treatment implementation. Consultants are experts in CPT, PE, and EMDR as well as supervisors within MHTP.

The trauma specialty addresses a critical need in the community for evidence-based treatments for PTSD. It provides trainees with the ability to provide these needed services not only during this training year, but beyond as they step into their careers. By the end of the training year, trainees will be able to independently provide trauma therapy in one of these modalities. This gives them a valuable professional skill they can continue to utilize throughout their careers and increase access to evidence-based trauma therapy in the community.
