Postdoctoral Residency

Cutting Edge
Treatment

San Rafael

North Bay Consortium (Vallejo, Vacavile, Santa Rosa and San Rafael)

The North Bay Consortium (NBC) includes Santa Rosa, San Rafael, Vallejo, Vacaville and Fairfield medical centers. We have a long and rich history in providing Postdoctoral Residency training. The NBC was the first consortium to receive APA accreditation, which was initially obtained on December 4, 2009.

While we maintain our APA status, psychologists across the 4 clinics collaborate to provide robust didactic training capitalizing on the clinical expertise spread across the region and creating a cutting-edge training experience for our residents. We collaborate regularly across service areas seeking consultation from our counterparts in other locations of NBC to provide the best quality care to our patients and the best quality training to our residents. We continue to grow and expand, what was once a small consortium of 13 residents and a few clinics has now grown to a robust 23 residents (and counting) spanning 5 clinics and 3 service areas.

We value diversity, equity, and inclusion and are proud to provide excellent clinical care to our vast patient populations and local communities.

Program Highlights

Member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC)

While our training program can be fast-paced and demanding, we offer ongoing consultation and an open-door policy to support our residents throughout the year as they encounter a broad range of patients and clinical situations. Our residents’ contributions are highly valued by the team, and the post-docs are seen and mentored as potential future permanent staff.

Our Mental Health Department in San Rafael is comprised of 5 teams: The Adult Team, the Child and Family team, the Intensive Outpatient Program, the Eating Disorder program, and the Addiction Medicine Recovery Services (AMRS).

The Department of Mental Health at the San Rafael Medical Center is located at 111 Smith Ranch Road. It is the second largest department in the medical center and provides a range of diagnostic and treatment services organized into three basic areas: Adult Services, including an Intensive Outpatient Program, Addiction Medicine Recovery Services and Child and Family Services. The clinic also provides for 24-hour psychiatric emergency services for acute psychiatric or addiction medicine needs. Our staff has a wide range of theoretical orientations, although Kaiser emphasizes a multi-modal approach to treatment involving brief therapy and a wide variety of group treatment programs, including both traditional EBT as well as third wave therapies.

Approximately 43 of our providers are licensed psychologists. Other disciplines on staff include psychiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, registered nurses and marriage and family therapists. A team of triage staff members provide front line access for patients through telephone and face-to-face contacts

Top values in our clinic are kindness, team work, and providing excellent patient care. We value trainees who are open and participate as key members of our treatment team.

On average, 50% of our post-docs are hired on to our permanent staff at the San Rafael and Petaluma clinic.

Several of our top managers and training directors completed their residency within the Kaiser Post-doctoral program.
